Project Sign
Summary
Project Sign was an early U.S. Air Force effort to collect and evaluate reports of flying discs and related aerial sightings. It followed the 1947 wave of public and military reports and established a formal military channel for intake, classification, and assessment.
Origin
Created after the 1947 flying disc reports reached Air Materiel Command and Air Force intelligence channels.
Scope
Collected reports, routed sightings through military review, and compared cases against aircraft, balloon, astronomical, and intelligence explanations.
Key personnel
Air Materiel Command intelligence staff at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base; early Air Force UFO investigators and consultants.
Termination
Replaced by Project Grudge in 1949 after internal disagreement over how to interpret unexplained reports.
Current status
Historical Air Force predecessor to Grudge and Blue Book; use this page for source-supported references to Sign.
